Dyring Music Practice Expectations
How Much Time to Practice
- Students are expected to diligently prepare lesson assignments each week.
- Every part of the assignment is important.
- The amount of practice time depends on your age, your level, and your goals.
- Your daily practice time should be the same as or more than the length of your lesson.
- More practice time will help you to improve faster.
Split Up Your Daily Practice Time
- Good practicing happens only when you are not distracted.
- If your mind starts to wander, it’s time to take a break!
- Come back later on in the day when your mind is fresh again.
Take Notes of How Much You Practice
- You can benefit from writing down your practice time.
- Write down in your lesson notebook how many minutes in each session, then add up your time for the day.
- For example, if you spend 15 minutes, then another 20, your total that day would be 35.
- Seeing how much time you actually practiced can better help you to understand your progress.
Quality of Practice
- The quality of your practice time is much more important than the number of minutes.
- With better quality practice time, you will accomplish more in less time.
- Practice and repeat small sections of your music at a time to focus on improving them.
- Aim to solve problems instead of repeating mistakes.
- Remember that you can’t do quality practicing unless you actually spend time practicing!
- Check the Resources pages for more advice on how to practice well.
Role of Parents
- Positive encouragement and reminders to practice can be helpful for students to learn to develop a stable practice routine.
- The most helpful guidance from parents motivates students to learn to solve problems for themselves.
